At the International Conference of Informatics and Semiotics in Organisations (ICISO) on July 19th 2010, organized by the University of Reading and sponsored by Capgemini, Mark Smalley delivered an industrial tutorial on application management for about 50 attendees.
The tutorial aimed to bring the state-of-the-art methodology and practice in IT and Management to the audience in industry and applied research. The tutorial was organised into three acts, which offered the opportunities for the audience to understand the trends in IT and Application Management, to learn the methods to cope with the challenges and to relate the methods to own experience.
Act 1 – Trends in IT and Application Management
The rapidly changing world is a challenge for organizations, including their information systems and the IT organizations. This presentation offered some thoughts on various trends, enabling the audience to understand better where you are and where you want to be. The presentation also introduced the ASL and BiSL process frameworks and best practices that provide guidance for both the supply and the demand side of the IT equation.

Act 2 – Top Challenges in IT and Application Management
The business is pressuring us to get more out of existing applications while reducing costs and headcount at the same time. In this workshop interactively established and explored which specific challenges the audience and their fellow participants are experiencing. This interactive workshop will be reinforced by a post-session white paper that summarizes and elaborates on these points. Takeaways:

Act 3 – Bringing Clouds down to Earth
Cloud Computing is like teenage sex. Everybody’s talking about it. Nobody does it very much. And when they do it, they don't do it very well. This presentation demystified cloud computing and explored how cloud computing is going to affect the Application Management domain.
